Kapar Kidz had a Blast at CNC launch!

June 11 2010 Categorized Under: All, Featured Posts, Misc, Stories No Comment

The day started with a light shower in the morning, which then paved the way for a very hot day!!! Despite the heat, the CNC launch was a great success … thanks to the support of our donors/sponsors, the local volunteers, the Kapar Kidz, but most of all, our Chief Organiser, Mageson and his dedicated helpers.

The moment they arrived, the children were delighted when they each received a bright orange Friends of Kapar tees (design, materials and printing – all sponsored).

This was followed by lunch which comprised of sausages, nuggets, vadai, and orange juice, which they feasted on with gusto!

After lunch, the volunteers and tutors helped the children get ready for their performances for the opening.

The opening of the CNC was officiated by the lighting of an oil lamp by Mageson representing the Kapar community, Karthik representing the Kapar Kidz, Shir Leen representing the donors & sponsors, and Ainie and Kim representing Friends of Kapar.

Then it was time for the Kapar Kidz to showcase their talents … there were several dance performances, a drama sketch, fashion show and a choir of the 1Malaysia song as the finale (more of this and pictures will be in a separate post).

After being entertained by the Kapar Kidz, our invited guests were shown around the CNC and treated to some local delights – putu mayam (or spring hoppers), nasi lemak, curry puffs, vadai, and green tea.

The launch carnival continued with a clown show, games and prizes, and more food … muffins, nestle ice-cream and free flow of nescafe, milo and Julie’s sugar crackers.

We achieved our main objective for the CNC launch – a carnival for the Kapar Kidz, and they had a BLAST!!!

Kapar Kidz helped (and had fun) getting CNC ready for the BIG DAY

Yesterday, Friends of Kapar coordinators and volunteers were at the centre, to spruce it up and getting it ready for the launch. We got about 12 Kapar Kidz to help, and we treated them chicken rice dinner – was a real treat for them.

Underprivileged children

They were so enthusiastic putting up wall stickers and then asking me to take their pictures against the wall backdrop from their effort.

Then when a few of them were helping me sort out the prizes for the games, they were looking and touching the items longingly … it was just simple puzzles, pencils, colour pencils, books, etc.

After all the work was done, they started practicing some of the dance steps for their performance today. There was no music but they somehow managed to coordinate their dance steps … I guess they must be “listening and connected to the music in their head”!!! And i was amazed that one of the kids, Mohan, can actually do break dancing and some of the difficult acrobatic/yoga poses, including handstand.

All in all, i think the kids had a lot of fun last night, and we were also entertained by their antics. And this was only the day before launch!

CNC housed the Tuition Centre, Computer Corner, Books Library and a Toy Library. Not huge, but good enough for Kapar Kidz to have the sense of belonging and call it their own.

With the launch of FRIENDS OF KAPAR Community Nurture Centre, we hope to create greater awareness for FRIENDS OF KAPAR, reach out and garner more support from the community to make these families’ battle in life less fearing and bring more joy into their life.

FRIENDS OF KAPAR, together with the support of kind donors and volunteers, hope to MAKE A DIFFERENCE in small steps … One Child, One Family, One Community at a time.

So, do join us at the launch (2:00pm to 6:30pm) and bring your friends and families. The CNC is at 1st Flr, No. 67 Lintang Dato Tahir 1, Kapar. If you need directions to the CNC, please contact Ainie or Kim.

Kartik Blossoming in Shanti’s Home

Remember Kartik, the paraplegic boy? He was previously under the care of his aunt, but was placed under the care of Shanti in Aug 2009. This was his condition, when he was under the care of his aunt who was feeding him mostly liquid food, as he could not feed himself. She didn’t have the time and patience to feed him solid foods. He was lying down all the time.

But under the proper and better care from Shanti, plus better nourishment (milk, oats, nestum and other solid foods) in the past 9 months, he has shown tremendous improvements. After 2 months in Shanti’s home, he was able to sit on a lazy chair and feed himself simple food like cookies.

Now, after 9 months in Shanti’s care, he has put on weight, able to sit up, able to take small steps when held by someone or with a walker, and he is able to feed himself. He sits on the floor as he is still not that stable sitting at the table for meals, and Shanti worries that he might fall off the chair. He is also more cheerful and is always smiling.

Now that he is stronger, we are planning to take him to the Klang GH for weekly physiotherapy and speech therapy … again made possible by generous donors. We hope that he will regain his ability to walk and communicate, so that he can live a more meaningful life.

If you wish to contribute towards Kartik’s well-being, please contact Ainie or Kim.

When was the last time your kids wash their own school shoes???

June 1 2010 Categorized Under: All, Misc, Stories No Comment

This really touched me! The moment I saw this boy scrubbing so hard at his school shoes, I knew I had to take a picture and post it on the blog. Firstly, the shoes are already so worn out. And there he was trying hard to make it clean and presentable. He was not only washing his own, but also for his siblings as I saw two other pairs already drying under the sun.

<Poor children

I don’t think children nowadays even know how to wash their own shoes, as these chores are usually done by the maid. I hope they realise how fortunate they are.

I wonder if this boy has been tasked to wash the buckets of clothes too!!!
